th / 0 21 20 64 v 2 1 0 Ju n 20 03 Medium modifications of kaons in pion matter

چکیده

Kaon in-medium mass and mean-field potential are calculated in isotopically symmetric pion matter at temperatures T M π to one loop of chiral perturbation theory. The results are extended to higher temperatures taking the existence of the K * (892) resonance into account and using experimental data on the πK scattering sand p-wave phase shifts. At RHIC temperatures T ∼ 170 MeV, the kaon mass correction and the mean-field potential are found to be δM K = −52 and V K = 49 MeV, while the kaon collision width equals Γ * K ∼ 90 MeV. The kaon in-medium broadening results in an acceleration of the φ → K ¯ K decay by a factor of 3. The increased apparent dilepton branching of the φ-mesons, observed recently by NA50, NA49, and the PHENIX collaborations at RHIC, can be interpreted in terms of rescat-terings of the secondary kaons inside of the pion matter.
